Long Term Sustainability (LTS) of outer space and Access to Space for All, are pressing issues for policymakers and private actors. The emerging field of astrosociology allows social scientists and global development professionals an opportunity to apply their expertise to the international development of outer space.

This course introduces astroscoiology and current challenges in space sustainability, shows how global development theory can be applied to widen participation from non-spacefaring nations, and uses the PASH (power, agency, scale, history) framework to analyse a space issue of your choice.

By the end of this course you will be aware of astrosociology and global programmes to widen participation from non-spacefaring nations, understand how global development theory can be used for outer space activities, and used the PASH framework to analyse a space issue of your choice.

  • WELCOME! Meet other members of your cohort and familiarise yourself with the online learning space.
  • MODULE ONE: Astrosociology and space governance.
  • MODULE TWO: Global space issues and understanding international development.
  • MODULE FOUR: Access to Space for All programme to widen participation from non-spacefaring nations.
  • MODULE THREE: Long Term Sustainability (LTS) in outer space and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • MODULE FIVE: PASH (power, agency, scale, history) as a framework for international development.
  • MINI PROJECT (OPTIONAL): Based on existing research/policy, use the PASH framework to analyse a space development issue of your choice.
  • This course is 100% online delivery, using text, diagrams and videos.
  • Modules are released at the same time, to be completed in your own time in any order.
  • Learning materials will be provided online and available as a PDF download.
  • Real-world case studies, research and space policies are used throughout.

No prior learning is required for this course.

The course is currently delivered in simple English. Any technical terminology used as part of the course, will be explained.

Assessment is ongoing and includes end-of-module quizzes.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a digital certificate of competence issued by the Centre of Astrosociology. File is provided in PDF format, A4, for you to print.
